South Central China, this simply but nicely potted example has at least two layers of different slip coatings over the grey body…which appear to have been applied one prior and one after the firing. Such practice may not be known from the North, and produced color variations on the surface as the slips degraded in the tomb environment. A nice band of double diamonds is found at the neck and the only faults are some general chipping of the everted lip. 6" tall and about 4-1/4" at the widest part of the body. 3rd millenium BC or earlier. A similarly-shaped jar is shown as early Neolithic (Chengbeixi Culture - 5800-4700BC) at the bottom of page (32) (unnumbered), in "Cultural Remains from the Changjiang Three Gorges Region", 1998, Chongqing Pub. House.
