Early North Carolina Autograph Document Signed
Early North Carolina Autograph Document Signed "John Hunt", one page, 7.5" x 12", likely New Bern, North Carolina, April 18, 1777, to "Mr. Speaker & Gentlemen of the Senate". It reads, "This House being desirous of appointing a Governor, Secretary of State, and Council of State have thought proper to inform you thereof and that they would be glad you would signify to them the names of each gentleman as you would put in nomination to fill those offices. This House on their parts recommend Richard Caswell Esquire to be Governor, James Glasgow Esquire to be Secretary and Cornelius Harnett, William Haywood, Edward Starkey, Joseph Teach, Thomas Eaton, William Taylor, John Simpson and Hezekiah Alexander Esquires to be a Council of State." By the time this singular document was penned, North Carolina's last Royal Governor had fled and the new state was establishing a permanent government. Richard Caswell had already been acting governor since January, 1777 and was formally elected by the General Assembly in April of that year. Expected browning, archival tape repairs to vertical margins, old mounting residue on verso. Overall good condition. Ex. Henry E.
