<B>Early New England</B></I> A good collection of over 190 documents from the environs of Rehoboth, Massachusetts and East Providence Rhode Island, all mounted (normally on just one margin) to the pages of a late nineteenth century ledger book. According to a penciled note at the start of the ledger, the documents, which date between 1697 and 1827, were first found by Samuel R. Chaffee in 1874 on the death of his grandmother who was descended from Thomas Chafee of Swansea who settled there in 1660. The papers, consisting of land deeds, estate inventories, legal documents, receipts, warrants, notices and commissions, document this family's long history in the region and provide a vivid glimpse into their daily lives and struggles. The most prominent family names in the collection include Chaffee, Butterworth, Newman, Carpenter, Paine, Ripley Milard, Fuller, and Peck. Of note is a Manuscript Document signed by the Selectmen of Rehoboth calling a town meeting, March 31, 1777, One page, 8" x 10.5". Among other topics to be considered at that meeting: "<I>to know the towns mind whether they will allow to the Persons that have been at Cost</B></I>[?] <I>in Raising men to Do turns in the Service of the United States Since Lexington Battle...</B></I>" Also of note is a Document Signed by Massachusetts Governor <B>Jonathan Belcher </B></I>one page, 16" x 13", Boston, April 25, 1740, an appointment of Daniel Orombee[?] as a Captain in the Rehoboth militia as well as another commission, this one issued by Massachusetts Governor <B>William Shirley</B></I> one page, 16" x 13", Boston, June 28, 1754, being an appointment of Timothy Peck as Captain Lieutenant "<I>of the Third Fo</B></I>[o]<I>t Company In the town of Rehoboth under the command of Lieutenant Colonoll</B></I> [sic] <I>Daniel Carpenter in the fifth Regiment of Militia within the County of Bristol...</B></I>" Documents are in a wide range of condition ranging from good to fine with the expected folds, some dampstains, toning, marginal losses and other faults.
