Early Naval cutlass circa late 18th century, probably American, with scabbard. The sword measures approx. 27-1/4” overall with 22” blade. The blade measures approx. 2-1/8” at widest part and is oddly shaped with a large center swell. The blade also is made without blood grooves or fuller. The hilt is forged iron and has a distinctly 1770-1790’s style. The grip is fluted hardwood with a slight turn to the grooves, which is nicely hand-carved. The condition is good and untouched with some light to moderate scattered surface erosion overall and a few areas of slightly heavier pitting with absolutely no cleaning. The grip is good with some losses, cracks, normal aging, but sound and generally good. The blade is original to the hilt, the scabbard is missing its tip and about 4” to the end. The leather is in poor condition and the forged iron hangar is very well made and shows a deep patina and is split at the top. In our considered opinion, this cutlass was American-made for the Navy, before the advent of standard patterns, however we can find no similar example or substantiation. Est: $1,250 - $2,500
