Early Kit Carson Daguerreotype- 1842 St. Louis Early Kit Carson Daguerreotype Portrait at Age 33,
Early Kit Carson Daguerreotype Portrait at Age 33, believed to have been taken in 1842 at St. Louis. This was an important year for Carson, as a chance encounter with the explorer John C. Fremont would alter his destiny. Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson had a young daughter and he thought that St. Louis would be a good place for her to be raised and educated. He was warmly welcomed there, as St. Louis was the headquarters for the southwestern trade and many of the trappers, traders, and army officers there either knew him or knew of his reputation. Carson soon found suitable guardians for his daughter and became anxious to get back to the "wild." This is when the two great men, whose names would always be linked to the westward expansion of America, met. John C. Fremont, a lieutenant in the army, had been ordered to make a thorough exploration of the territory between the Mississippi valley and the Pacific Ocean. Kit Carson signed on to be his guide and his knowledge and expertise contributed greatly to the success of these missions. The rest, as we say, is history. This rare daguerreotype is in very fine condition and is in an attractive, velvet-lined case with intact hinge and clasp. This great portrait of an American legend could be the centerpiece to any "Wild West" collection.
