This lot contains a Early Hopi Indian polychrome root Kachina doll 19th to early 20th century. This excellent doll shows some great color and character, it is in good condition for its age, with only small amounts of wear. Kachina dolls originally were, and still are, made to be given away as gifts to Hopi children so that they may learn the different Kachinas and the stories and religious significance attached to them. Kachinas are holy spirits that live upon the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona and other sacred mountains in the Southwest. The dolls were not used as toys, but rather were hung from walls or displayed on the floor, to provide spiritual protection or provide luck for the family. The dolls were passed down from generation to generation, staying with the tribes for hundreds of years. Measures .
