Early Hawken rifle marked on the top flat of the barrel “S. Hawken, St. Louis” and illustrated in “The Gun Report” magazine in February 1964 in an article by Cleves H. Howell Jr. entitled “Old Lady Hawken”. The rifle is iron mounted withscroll trigger guard and double set triggers. The rifle measures 53” overall with 36” barrel of .52 caliber rifled. It is the opinion of several experts and Mr. Gary that this rifle was made in the 1830s to 1840s by J. S. Hawken and returned to St. Louis later and the Hawken shop where S. Hawken replaced the barrel when the earlier barrel was shot out or damaged. The rifle remains in good to very good condition showing a light gray to brown patina finish on the metal surfaces withsome scattered minor erosion, pinprick pitting and staining. The stock is very good plus showing some even wear from being carried but is still in very good condition with just normal aging to the original finish. The lock is in good workingcondition and the rifle is generally exceptional overall and a very desirable full stock. There is an inventory number PL3 painted near the butt plate on the right rear of the stock. Obtained by William Gary from noted Americana collector Ed
