1743 This very early 5.5" x 2.5" x 1" wooden gold scale box is fastened with simple wire loops and is lined in green cloth. The three compartments in the box contain the balance with two cups and 11 weights of different sizes. The top of the case bears a scalloped design. The underside of the lid bears an early handwritten label which describes appropriate weights of gold for different denominations (half dollar, quarter dollar, etc.) and notes the date Jan. 1743. This gold scale may have been used as an assay scale during the early North Carolina or Georgia gold rushes. A fantastic early piece. This simple oval tin, 3.25" x 2.25" x 0.75", us unmarked and bears no labels, but contains a balance with finely decorated pans. The interior is lined on the bottom with red and gold patterned velvet. A small golden nugget is included. - HKA#64327
