Early First Model Dragoon, .44 cal. percussion, U.S. marked frame, traces of original finish within a brown patina, varnished wood grips, serial #1423. Less than 100 numbers after the last knownWhitneyville Hartford transition #1337. The barrel shows a good clear reversed address, early style ramrod and latch with assembly number on ramrod and inside of lug (note early Dragoons had assembly numbers on theramrods, not the pistol's serial number). The pistol also shows the screw splitting the trigger guard number and a very wide Walker style guard. Additionally, the pistol shows Colts patent more to the center of the frameas with the early U.S. models; the Dragoon shows varnished slim jim grips. Also, the pistol shows an early style hammer, large ovoid cylinder stops and many other early characteristics. Old time collectors feelthese U. S. stamped guns between the 14 and 2,000 range may have been sent to state militias in the west, explaining their lack of inspections and varnished wood grips.
