In all the realms of collecting there is rare and then there is make them drool rare. This is one of the latter and it is in excellent pristine condition. In the 1930s Cross made some fountain pens both gold filled sleeve filling and bakelite bulb filling and sold them to Packard as premiums for their salesmen. This is well documented throughout many of the vintage pen web sites and also on some of the Packard automobile collectors sites. I'm sure some of the gold filled went to some of their better customers and the highest-level salesmen but the Bakelite pens were for lower level sales and so not quite so sought after. Consequently very few survived, the Bakelite cracked and the bulb dried out so they were thrown away. Well, this one didn't get thrown away and now you can have it for your collection and be the envy of all those others. Black in color with an amber colored center cylinder so that you can see the ink level. The bulb is still pliable and we can detect no cracks or tears in it. There are no cracks or mars anywhere on this wonderful item. The clip is gold and I believe it to be real gold because there is no wear to it. I cannot find a mark on it for this but I'm not about to pry the clip up to see if it's on the back either. Measures 5" long and the nib is marked Durham #4 and is also in perfect condition. Don't miss out on this treasure.
