Early Clarence White Photograph,
an 8.25 x 7 toned platinum portrait, of a brother and sister, identifed in pencil on mount behind as "Portrait of Johnthn Beatty Jr. and sis. With handstamp of "Clarence H. White. Newark, Ohio" and signed in pencil lower right "Clarence H. White." An early portrait by White, a Newark book-keeper and founder of the Newark Camera Club in 1898. In 1899 Alfred Stieglitz exhibited some of his work at the New York Camera Club, and promoted him as a member of the "Photo-Secessionists." White moved to New York in 1906, thus this image was taken before then. A rare image, made before White emerged as one of the 20th century's most noted photographers.
Print with a light "spidering" crease over the eye of one the infant, and just a hint of a central bend.
