Offered here is a wonderfully evocative carved wood sculpture of a head, presumably a santo head. I am pretty sure it is at least 18th century, and possibly earlier. It definately has characteristics that are masculine, if will you notice the heavy brow ridge, and the straight nose, and the turn of the mouth. As you can see, there is a crack that runs down one side of the face, a piece of the other side of the face that has loss, losses to the nose, and parts of the ears are missing. (That sounds awful, doesn't it?) There are traces of old paint on the back of the head and around the neck. It is mounted on a stand that is early, but not original to the piece. The dowel, or peg that fits into the base is not original in my opinion. I don't find the condition to be a problem in the least. I think he has a profound stoicism about him that is haunting. I find it to be quite a beautiful sculpture. it is very touchable, which I like in a sculpture. The back of the head fits nicely in the palm of of you hand, the wood is smooth and only slightly cool to the touch. The sculpture measures 11.5" on the stand. The bust alone is about 7".
