Award presented to Arthur Ashe in 1967 as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Beneath a patriotic eagle, the scroll-style plate is engraved: ''LT. ARTHUR ASHE / For / Outstanding Contributions / To The / World of Tennis / N.O. Hardcourt / Tennis Club / Members, Friends / And Admirers / 1967''. By this time Ashe had already made history as the first black member of the prestigious U.S. Davis Cup Team. The next year would see him win the men's singles title at the U.S. Open, another first for an athlete of African American descent, and the first of three Grand Slam titles Ashe would win in the course of his career. Shield-shaped award, made by Trophies For Champions, measures 10.5'' x 15.75''. Pencil notation to verso, scattered nicks to wood with abrasion to lowermost corner, light soiling to plate, adhesive square near the bottom and minor chipping to finish on the eagle, else near fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
