Early American flintlock fowling piece attributed to Phineas Sawyer showing 53 ¼” barrel, 68 ½” overall in .72 caliber smoothbore or about 12 gauge. The gun is full stocked to the muzzle in a reddish colored wood which may be cherry wood. The stock is in fair condition with some large losses at the muzzle and along the top edge where it meets the barrel. The lock is in its original flintlock configuration with correct hammer and small parts and has seen a lot of shooting and use. The engraving on the lock is Sawyer’s style. There is some rust and pitting also there are some small losses around the lock area. The mounts show simple American style light engraving and an acorn finial on the top of trigger guard. We would date this arm at about 1750 to 1780 and many of these type arms were used by citizen soldiers during the Revolutionary war era. Est.: $1,500-$3,000.
