This is an original authentic framed needlework sampler dated to circa 1818. After the 1700's sampler work of the upper classes spread, the original function of the sampler changed to become more for the apprenticeship of young girls. During the 18th and 19th centuries, most schools and orphanages set girls to stitch samplers as part of their education. This sampler shows a wonderful design with two pious verses with a decorative border and embroidered images throughout. The piece has been signed and dated near the bottom "Ann Ford Finished in the year 1818". It shows good condition and has been professionally matted and framed with museum grade UV glass. One of the finer Early American Samplers of the early 19th Century we have offered for sale. Similar samplers have sold at other historic auctions with provenance for upwards of $30,000. The frame measures 17.25" x 20.75".
