Huge Early American Hand-Carved Treenware Ladle Scoop
c. 1830s Early 19th Century, Hand-Carved Antique Wooden Treenware Ladle Scoop, Folk Art Design, Measures 20” in length with 5” diameter bowl, Choice Very Fine.
This sizable, circa 1830-50 is a fine Treenware Ladle Scoop, representation of the skill and craft of rural wood carving. It is all Hand-carved out of a single piece of wood, which looks to be maple, measuring 20” in length with a 5” diameter bowl. As wooden utensils just required simply the time and skill to make them, they were far more common than their more costly metal counter parts. The downside being that the wooden examples did not survive nearly as long. Today, Antique Wooden Treenware examples are considered far more rare. This example said to have come to us out of a specialized collection that was assembled over decades. Signs of original carving marks throughout, and a great formed handle end that would have rested against the side edge of a pot or other large serving vessel. Large size Ladles such as this were used to stir and serve soups, porridge, broth, etc., while also being placed near well buckets for those who needed a drink. Overall, well made and in excellent “museum” quality condition, that is perfectly ready for display.
