The lot features a very unique and unusual Early American Cast Iron ornate “praying hands”, “clasped hands” or “clapping hands” Buggy Reins Holder. The piece shows two cast iron handles in a scissor like fashion with a pivot at the center (which is adjustable) that would have closed around the leather reins from the Buggy or Wagon horses harness at the base of the clasped set of human hands. The piece shows an original nickel finish near the top. These would have been crafted during the 18th to 19th Century and are considered some of the most unique and well-crafted set ever brought to the public market. Each hand shows a flat appearance with detailed finger-nails. This would truly be an excellent addition to any Early American, Old Western, Buggy, or Cast-Iron Collection. These would have been owned and ordered from the Blacksmith by a prominent family or business such as the Wells Fargo Company, Overland Express, the William A. Clark Family, the Marcus Daly Family, or other earlier settler’s and influence men of the Old West and Early America. The piece shows an overall good condition and measures 1.5” W (when closed) and 19” long. The piece has been examined by a buggy collector and was found to be authentic.
