Have you noticed what a comeback plateaus have staged lately? These are the ornate, mirrored display trays that added so much sparkle to dinner tables, buffets and vanities in Victorian and Art Deco days. Now that their beauty and versatility have been rediscovered, even newly made replicas of silverplate are selling for over $1,000 (and over $1,500 if sterling).



Here's a genuinely old sterling one that you can own for about the price of a reproduction. It's a remarkable piece from the estate of a collector who lived in Central America between the 1930s and 1960s, which explains its Peruvian origin. Peru has always been one of the world's biggest suppliers of silver goods and has an ancient tradition of fine craftsmanship. This design - with its graceful shells, swirls and garlands - harks back to their work in the 18th century, when Andean Baroque was succeeded by Andean Rococo styling.



The gorgeous 16-inch by 14-inch frame, hallmarked "Plata 925 Peru" followed by a star, is an oval (far more rare than rounds and rectangles). "Plata" in Spanish means Sterling, not plated. The metalwork is attached by many tiny screws to the well-finished wooden backing fitted with four silvered feet plus a sturdy hanger. Adding still more impact is an exceptional mirror, which has a wide and deeply beveled edge that follows the detailed contours of the frame.
