Nice Early 20th Century South American Bird's Head Machete Sword, with leather scabbard. Bright polished cast steel blade measures 26'' long and 1-1/2'' wide. There are remnants of a maker's paper label on one side, the other side having stamped maker's mark of ''Fernando Esser, Elberfeld, Acero Fundido, Guarantizado'', with an anvil and hammer logo. The ''S''-shaped crossguard and bird's head pommel appear to be cast brass that is heavily nickel plated. Checkered horn grip panels retained by checkered screws. Leather scabbard is nicely decorated with wavy designs, marked in stamped letters ''Rosendo Villalobos''. OAL is 31-1/2''. Condition is very good with the blade in nice original polish with just a few scattered pinprick-size rust stains. The paper label has some losses. Hilt fittings are nicely age toned. Grip panels are in very good condition. Leather scabbard shows scuffs and scrapes from age, with a couple of inches of torn stitching to the back side near the tip. Est.: $250-$450.
