Early 19th century yellow pine upholstered sofa, tapered legs, curved arms, grain-painted sides, faint pencil inscription near center of back said to be "Jacob Bull," Caswell County, North Carolina, later upholstery, 27-1/2 x 79-1/2 x 23 in. Provenance: Griffin Collection. Examples of upholstered furniture in the North Carolina back country are rare. The tradition and style of upholstered sofas and chairs came to the North Carolina back country with the early Moravian settlers and reflect in some cases the Biedermeier taste.
