Early 1900's Rock Quarry Photographs (3)
This lot consists of three very unique photographs of a rock quarry and factory and the men who worked them. The first photograph is attached to a matted board and has a slight sepia tone to it. The photograph is 9 3/4" X 8" and the board is 11" X 14". The photograph shows inside the quarry, where slabs that appear to be 5' X 5' X 5” were cut. Inside the quarry are three men standing next to the steam machinery. The next photograph is in a simple black frame. This is a long distance shot of a very deep quarry hole with stairs leading down. Also in the photograph are the support buildings on the top of the quarry. On the back of this photograph is written “1915/1914/1913”. There is also a label from "The Store of Photography E.J. Curtis 397 North Street Pittsfield, Mass." on the back. The third photograph is attached to mat paper and in a silver color frame. The frame is 9 3/4" X 7 3/4" and the photo is 6 1/2" X 4 3/4". This photograph is a poised shot of nineteen workers outside the quarry building, where finishing work was done. These photographs are a unique look back at the working life that it took to truly "Build" America”. Look around today at city buildings that still stand and think about the men who harvested those blocks. These photographs are in very good condition, with minor damage to the frames and matting from age.
