Offered in this lot we have a cast iron Columbian watermelon hog oiler originating from the early 20th century. The piece shows cast iron construction with a two part rolling oiler and a cast iron base. Hog oilers where designed and widely used in the early 1900's to help protect hog and pig from disease carrying insects. The pieces where designed to take advantage of the animals natural tenancies to scratch themselves and apply oil as they scratch to protect the skin. The oiler is marked on each side reading "Columbian Hog Oiler Pat ~ 29. 1916". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The piece shows good condition for its age with some rusting and wear. The oiler measures approximately 20" long by 13" wide and 15" tall.
