Early 18th century pair of brass mounted pocket-size flintlock pistols from northern Europe probably Dutch, signed “A.S.” on the bottom edge of the locks. The pair measure approximately 9” overall with 4” barrels of approximately .44caliber false rifled. The barrels, mounts and locks are made of brass and the hammers show a brass cover which is engraved to match and an unusual decorative feature. The frizzen, top jaw and screw are steel. The locks are completelyoriginal. The brass mounts show a rich coating of gold gilt and are nicely engraved. The locks are of the early style and show a pronounced banana shape indicating manufactured before 1740. The condition is near fine showing almost no use withjust slight handling and almost no wear. The carving around the tang is still very sharp and the wood is generally near excellent condition. The side plates are pierced and show serpents. From the configuration and design this pair couldbe as early as 1720 or even a bit before. Est.: $3,000-$6,000
