Early 1870's Brooklyn Atlantics Albumen Photo
Early 1870's Brooklyn Atlantics Albumen Photograph, Type 1. While the condition of this remarkable artifact is admittedly poor, its very existence should thrill serious 19th century baseball collectors, who understand the tremendous significance of this short-lived squad. The Atlantic team was one of baseball's very first, established in 1855, and was a founding member of the National Association of Base Ball Players in 1857. The team pictured here dates from the club's second incarnation as a member of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, which the Atlantics initially refused to join, but relented in the League's second season after their best players jumped ship to earn a paycheck. The birth of the National League in 1876 started the slow decline of the fortunes of the Atlantic, which effectively closed up shop for good after the 1881 season.

The 10x13" albumen photo shows significant water damage at its upper half, though only one member of the nine has had his identity entirely obscured by the staining. The lower half of the image presents exceedingly well in comparison, and allows a fine examination of the serious looking gentleman who comprised on of baseball's first professional teams. An elegant scripted "Atlantic" appears on the lower border of the mount, which extends the final dimensions of the piece to 13x16".
