Early 1870's Albumen Photograph of a Baseball Game in Progress, Type 1. Posed photographs of ballplayers from this era are tough enough, but collectors of early baseball photography will surely attest that action shots are all but nonexistent. One serious collector will break new ground with the purchase of this remarkable image that captures a white-shirted pitcher about to deliver a "submarine"style throw in the direction of a waiting batter. A sizeable crowd of spectators line the edges of the field, with the buildings and church spire of Wesleyan University rising behind them. This Middletown, Connecticut scene was published in The National Pastime Magazine in 1984, with the accompanying article explaining that it wasn't until 1882 that the overhand pitch was legalized in the official rule book. The photo measures approximately 6x8" in size, with the original period mount bringing the final dimensions to 10x13". Condition is remarkable, with light toning and a single wrinkle to the mount the only consideration. NRMT.
