Measuring 48 1/2 inches overall, with a 42 inch double edged blade. The single-fluted ricasso extends into the guard, with "AN MARTINEZ EN TOLEDO" in the flutes and a combined square and hexagonal cross-section, transitioning to a lozenge profile for the rest of the length. The ricasso has the town mark of Toledo at the lower end of the guard. The guards is fitted with a pair of straight quillions, 8 1/4 inches wide, with the basket section extending from the knuckleguard up above the quillions. With a wire wrapped ribbed grip and an octagonal pattern pommel. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Very good, with a mixed gray patina on the steel, light dings on the edges, and scattered potting. The wrapping is solid, with no detectable play in the furniture. The Martinez family were active sword smiths during the 16th and 17th centuries.
