Earliest Known Coca Cola Dispenser
Earliest Known Coca Cola Dispenser. Made of Brilliant Cut Glass and designed by H. J. Turner of Crown Pottery, Praed Street, London. The design was entered during the week from September 28th and October 3rd, 1891. The design number was 179154 and the base of the dispenser has etched in it (Regd No. 179154). Further research may be obtained by contacting the Register of Designs and the Illustrated Official Journal in London. It is our belief that the Coca Cola Company had commissioned Crown Pottery to design a Syrup Dispenser to be used in Drug Stores to dispense syrup for medicinal purposes. By the time this dispenser was delivered to the Coca Cola Company for approval, the Coca Cola Company had decided not to market their product so much as a medicinal cure but rather a delicious soft drink. Therefore, the company commissioned another company to design a dispenser that was not clear glass but ceramic. This would keep the people from seeing the unpleasant residue from the syrup as it lowered in the dispenser. Instead of throwing it away, it ended up in the Jacobs Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia and was used there until it was acquired by Mr. R. W Griffin in 1895. It was handed down to his son R. D. Griffin in 1933 and the family is now disposing of his estate. We stand behind this piece 100 percent and will guarantee it to be 115 years old and authentic. It has a few small chips around the top rim otherwise it is in excellent original condition with the original gold painted logo. It stands 24 1/2 inches tall and is 11 inches in diameter at the widest point. The mouth of the top of the dispenser was made wide enough to accept a one gallon crock jug. This may be one of the finest pieces of Coca Cola History ever found.
