Earl Norem, One-of-a-Kind Cover Art Drawing, Deadliest Heroes of Kung Fu #1
Rare preliminary cover art for Deadliest Heroes of Kung Fu #1, a martial arts-themed magazine published by Marvel Comics in 1975. Executed in graphite on onion-skin paper by legendary artist Earl Norem in late 1974, this dynamic illustration features Norem's interpretations of Bruce Lee and Quay Chang Cain (portrayed by David Carradine in the Kung Fu TV series), locked in an intense duel before an ornate temple backdrop. Earl Norem was a prolific American illustrator celebrated for his work on magazines, pulp covers, and comic-related publications. Known for his striking realism and dramatic composition, Norem contributed extensively to Savage Sword of Conan, Planet of the Apes, and various Marvel magazine titles throughout the 1970s and 80s. His dynamic style helped define the visual tone of action and fantasy comics during that era. Rendered on a large sheet, the drawing is composed with heavy pencil lines and detailed shading. Production grid lines are visible, and the condition remains very good, showing expected wear from age and handling. A rare survivor, as much of Marvel's pre-1980 production art was either discarded or gifted to fans, making this piece a fortunate and significant relic of comic history.
