Eagle Hilt Artillery Officer's Sabre,<p>circa 1805. A "five ball" example, similar to those made in England during this period. Hilt of gilded cast brass, with a "weeping" eagle pommel. Blade with unstoppered 3/4 fuller, blued and acid etched, with one side decorated with "Warranted" ribbon, American, shield-breasted eagle and "E Pluribus Unum" banner, the other with a Liberty Cap and pole and floral motifs. Total length 33.25" With its original leather scabbard, with gilded brass mounts. (See Mowbray, "The American Eagle Pommel Sword" Type 15, pg 111 for an example with nearly identical blade decorations).<p>Blade with generous amounts of original bluing and gilt highlighting, with scattered surface rust. Scabbard solid, though probably with some restoration.
