EXTREMELY RARE “So CAROLINA” SURCHARGED
REVOLUTIONARY WAR CHARLEVILLE MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42 1/2" round barrel with large “So CAROLINA” seen on only few other Revolutionary War arms. There is also a vertically stamped “US” at breech which is a later federal era marking. The lock is marked with a vertical 3/8" “US”. The last digits of date on breech appear to read “70”. CONDITION: good overall and untouched since found. The sideplate was replaced with brass and has same shellac coating as rest of gun. Top jaw and screw are replaced. There is repair to the wood between lock and barrel tang which has same shellac or painted coating as rest of gun. Barrel was cut about 1-2" to 42 1/2" removing bayonet lug, the front band was just forced backwards without changing stock or band spring to give barrel clearance. Metal overall is dark patina and uncleaned. Stock is darkest where coated but appears original other than repair. All-in-all this is an honest representative of a South Carolina musket, only a few are known. Mechanically fine clear smooth bore. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (01-17753/JS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.
