WINCHESTER 1866 LEVER ACTION SRC. Cal. 44 Henry Rimfire. S# 38555. Nickel finished brass action has extensive engraving. Left side of top tang is marked "HLU" referring to Herman Leslie Ulrich (1846-1947), son of Conrad Ulrich. The engraving on this rifle is very similar to rifle # 38549 as pictured on pg. 65 of the 1985 edition of the Madis book. This rifle, which is known to be signed in the same way is one of the few Herman Leslie Ulrich signed rifles known to exist. Madis states that this pattern is typical of the Ulrich's more expensive work & gives the following description of this style "The flowers engraved between major scrolls, symmetrical shield and geometric patterns, and few overlying or entwining scrolls were engraved by this master. A serpent, as on the left sideplate here, will occasionally be found in the scroll work engraved by Ulrich. Behind the forend flare of the receiver, note that the border is straight, and does not follow the curve of the receiver.". Bbl. 20" w/ mag. band mounted front sight & 800 yard carbine rear sight. Carbine forearm & straight grip stock w/ engraved crescent brass trapdoor buttplate are replacements of fancy black walnut. Left inside of lower tang is marked "S" followed by "XX" wood quality marking. Mfg. 1870. CONDITION: bbl. & mag. tube finish have faded to mottled gray brown showing scattered corrosion & very light pitting. The action retains a sm. amount of nickel finish in the protected areas around the hammer, saddle ring, trigger & lever areas. Balance of action has a mottled mustard color showing numerous handling marks & sm. dents most noticeable around the front receiver flare. Stocks have good finish. Right side of forearm near tip has a small chip. Sound mechanics. Bore retains sound rifling showing small areas of very light pitting. (01-17958/DS). ANTIQUE. $17,500-25,000.
