EXTREMELY RARE HENRY DERINGER KENTUCKY MILITARY
RIFLE OF TYPE KNOWN USED IN TEXAS REVOLUTION 1835-1836. Cal. 52. NSN. 58" Overall. Bbl. 43" oct., brass blade front sight, fixed notch rear sight, classic Deringer 7 land & groove rifling, stamped on top flat “H. DERINGER PHILa”. Rebated sharp tail lock also marked “H. DERINGER / PHILa”. Unique Deringer 4 piece patch box terminating in eagle head, which is rarely seen & identical to the Vic Frederich’s identified Texas Revolution rifle of G. King, pictured in the 1973 text Arms for Texas by Michael Koury. This rifle, like the few other military examples, has tiger striped maple stock & an unknown inspector’s mark rear of trigger guard which appears to read “R.U”. This rare survivor shows hard use but still retains its original ramrod w/ iron tip that attaches to the original worm retained in patch box. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: collector notes & copy of excerpt from Arms for Texas. CONDITION: good to very good overall, not taken apart but most likely reconversion as cock, pan, frizzen spring all appear replaced, lockplate, sideplate & lock screws are original. Bbl., lock, & trigger have overall dark iron patina. Brass has medium mustard patina. Stock is sound w/ several discernible repairs including long sliver inset along forestock channel on right forward of lock, 3" inset between nosecap & front bbl. key, insets around middle key way. Regardless of restoration, this is an aesthetically pleasing example of a very rare circa 1810-1820 Philadelphia made Kentucky rifle that has seen use. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (01-17745/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
