EXTRAORDINARY CAMEO GLASS PRESENTATION PITCHER FOR THE YACHT CECELLE.
Lot 564 EXTRAORDINARY CAMEO GLASS PRESENTATION PITCHER FOR THE YACHT CECELLE. This magnificent large late 19th or early 20th Century French cameo glass pitcher was probably a commissioned piece as some form of commemoration for the Yacht Cecelle. It is anticipated that it was done some time around 1901 or 1902 as this very yacht in 1900 was named the Excelsior, its name was change to the Cecelle in 1901 or 1902 and later changed in 1904 to Jeanne. The Cecelle as per the Yacht register for 1902 was a wood vessel, 26 ton built by J. Leclere and Rouen in 1889 (France?). The owner in 1902 was Paul Barbou and the yacht was out of the Rouen Port. This is all according to the Yacht Village Register of Yachts from May 1, 1902 to April 30, 1903. The large oversized pitcher with bulbous base is of thick ruby glass cut to frosted. It has a large clear crystal applied handle. The underside has a ground pontil and much wear. The deep cameo scene executed in much detail depicts in the forefront the Yacht Cecelle, a steam yacht flying various flags with a sunburst on the horizon. To the left and the right of the Cecelle are various sailing vessels, including square-riggers and schooners. The sky around the surface of the pitcher is filled with gulls and the water is carved in depth with choppy waves. The piece is unsigned (except for a bogus Galle signature, which was inscribed in the top, which was added at some later time). Accompanying this lot is some paper documents including a letter from Mystic Seaport Museum regarding the Cecelle. SIZE: Approx. 12" tall. The base is approx. 9 1/2" diameter. CONDITION: Appears very good to excellent. Note: There are some extremely fine rigging lines on the boat, these thin strands of ruby glass have some teeny losses, other than that this magnificent presentation piece appears to be in fine condition. 5-67572 (2,500-4,500+)(-)
