EXCEPTIONALLY RARE PRE CIVIL WAR TO CIVIL WAR
PERIOD U.S. MOUNTED RIFLEMAN'S SHELL JACKET. This jacket is one of the true rarities of uniform collecting. These uniforms were originally authorized for the US Mounted Rifle Regiments. They were used by the Mounted Rifles until August 3, 1861 when the Mounted Rifles became the 3rd US Cavalry & were issued yellow trimmed shell jackets. The remaining green trimmed shell jackets were issued to & used by the 1st & 2nd New York Mounted Rifle Regiments during the Civil War until mid 1863 when the 1st & 2nd New York Mounted Rifles were issued 2 button sack coats. This jacket has a dark blue body w/ a rich green trim. There are 11 period small eagle buttons down the front, 2 on each collar & 2 on each cuff. Both pillows on the lower back are intact. Lining is a light blue material which seems to be of cotton & wool. The right sleeve has a size “3” stamp along w/ a manufacturer’s mark that reads, “JOHN BOYLAN NEWARK N.J.” in a rectangle. Sleeves are lined w/ white cotton. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: binder of photos & paperwork collected by consignor. CONDITION: jacket has obviously been worn but is surprisingly solid & free of all but minor moth damage. The lining is threadbare in many areas but is quite solid throughout. Sleeve linings are complete w/ minor staining. (02-14671/BF). $7,000-13,000.
