EXCEPTIONAL ROCOCO ROSEWOOD CONSOLE WITH MARBLE

TOP. Probably Philadelphia. Early 3rd quarter, 19th century. This lovely well carved console retains its original Breschia marble top with serpentine and molded edges above the conforming molded frieze. The apron is serpentine in form and is carved overall with a deep, well executed shell carving and C-scrolls. The apron has molded edges and recessed panels. The console was designed to be setup against the wall and therefore rear of apron is a wide board that has been drilled for screws and bolts to be attached to the wall. The front three sides are finished. The console is raised on wonderfully proportioned tapering molded cabriole legs, carved with deep shells at the shoulder with pendant leafage and fruit that matches the central shell carved in the apron. The legs are joined by an extraordinary carved stretcher that is both foliate and floral carved, again with a deeply carved shell at the center above scrolled leaf decorations. The legs terminate in scrolled snail feet of delicate proportions. SIZE: 48" h x 42 1/2" w x 21" d overall. CONDITION: very good. Small professional restoration at the stretcher where it joins the front legs. (05-169/JJ). $1,000-1,500.
