EXCEEDINGLY RARE SWISS MODEL 1906 E SERIES

LUGER SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. Cal. 7.65 mm (30 Luger). S# E.858. The Swiss assembled very very few E. prefix M 1906 Lugers referenced in the classic book by Geoff Sturgess, Vol. 1, Page 552, w/ an estimated production of just 20 pistols. Most were assembled in small batches as replacements for existing numbers, Sturgess having noted that most were in the range of 565-784. This example & one other, found on an internet search, in the 800 range. This pistol, that has no import marks, is a standard configuration M1906 with Bbl. 120mm (approx. 4 3/4"), saw tooth blade front sight & “V” notched rear sight. Cross in Shield over chamber & DWM on middle toggle link. “E.858” on front of frame & under bbl, the last two or three digits repeated on all the usual small parts (takedown lever is unnumbered) & both grips. Usual Swiss cross on left side of bbl. extension & frame below rear toggle link. Military magazine with wood plug/metallic disks. Major components are rust blued; takedown lever trigger, magazine release & safety lever are strawed. Accompanied by two spare identically configured magazines and two different screwdriver tools: one in a hollowed, brass, military inspected container with press fit cap containing screwdriver, jag, and two bristle brushes; the second (very scarce-consigner mentioned only one other known) with a military inspected wooden handle and separate, double-bladed screwdriver shaft. Pistol & accessories contained in sturdy leather covered carrying case w/ leather handle, French fitted, lined with dark green felt, compartmentalized for pistol, each of two spare magazines w/ compartments for cleaning accessories/ammunition including sealed black labeled box of 24 cartridges dated 24.4.47. Paired brass fittings, each key locked with two hooks requiring simultaneous depression for release (key not present). MAGS: 3 TOTAL; plated proper 8 rd. Swiss w/ unmarked wood bases having distinctive metal disks. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: green felt lined leather display / carry case (consignor states used by dealers) having brass trim for leather handle & unusual brass latches; no keys. Latches of case differ from any shown in reference books. CONDITION: near excellent as arsenal reworked, the bbl with a very lightly matte texturing, the balance of the gun having a crisp rust blue, with just a few small discolorations on the breech block & minimal thinning of the freshened straw. Left grip screw slightly touched up; the right grip screw w/ a naturally faded dome. Grips w/ crisp oil darkened checkering, negligible handling marks & no cracks. Although the brass screwdriver handle has been lightly polished, all magazines, the other screwdriver & the attache/presentation case are in the same condition as the pistol. An extremely attractive “E” prefix M1906 Cross in Shield Luger, highest recorded serial number, whose accessories add to its dramatic presentation. (22-8/LA). CURIO. $20,000-25,000.
