EXCEEDINGLY RARE EARLY AMERICAN FIREHOUSE AND HORSE DRAWN PUMPER.
Believed to be only one of two known complete examples to exist today! The second one is believed to be pictured in Barney Barenholtz's book. Oftentimes it is hard to decipher exactly who manufactured what and when, this appears to be a collaboration between Merriam (manufactured tin toys) and Reed (manufactured wooden toys). The question being did Reed make the firehouse for Merriam or did Merriam make the horse drawn pumper for Reed? Either way it's a remarkable toy most likely produced during the 1870-1880s time period. The pumper itself is approximately 7-1/2" in length drawn by a set of painted tin white horses. A painted tin silhouette driver and a painted tin silhouette fireman standing behind boiler. Pumper itself is constructed of wood and decorated/painted in appropriate colors. The firehouse is primarily constructed of wood with gold stenciled simulated windows & cresting applied to the red firehouse. Most intriguing is the operation of this remarkable toy, the hinged gray roof opens exposing the simplicity yet ingenuity of this toy. 1) A lever on the back with a wooden hammer allows the child to strike a bell within. 2) A cord allows the window above the front door to open and a hand painted tin silhouette figure of a fire man pops out of top window. 3) A second cord is pulled opening the front doors of the firehouse. 4) A lever is lifted and the pumper urgently rushes out of the firehouse by means of a rubber band while staying in a straight line due to the grooved flooring. The operations are most simplistic with perhaps only a new rubber band needed for the propulsion of the pumper and possibly a replacement string. This toy appears to be 100% original, including an aged, dried out rubber band on underside of pumper. A unique opportunity to purchase an extraordinary early American toy for ones collection. Although this toy is somewhat diminutive in size that is perhaps one of the reasons it is so impressive and appealing and easily could fit in without consuming a large of display space. This was one of Steve and Diane's favorite toys, which they purchased many years ago at a Maine auction, at that point in time it was a fresh to the market, out of the attic find! Upon close examination and studying this toy, virtually any toy collector could become enthralled and desirous of adding this to their collection. SIZE: 11-1/2" d x 8" w x 8-3/4" t. PROVENANCE: The Diane and late Steve Olin collection. CONDITION: Overall toy appears in 100% all original, untouched, as found condition. Possible very amateur aged repair to left horse, reattaching to external wire? Exterior of firehouse displays 100+ years of light soiling to finish, and tin figures show some typical paint loss, but overall are more than acceptable. 1-13273
