Very much an expressionist painter his entire career, Spruce's late paintings continue to break new ground. The complexity of these late works is stunning. Each time you look at this painting you will discover new things, shapes, objects, forms, and suggestions that continue to engage and challenge the viewer to interpret the artist's intent.

The large central form of the yucca becomes monumental in the composition. To the upper left is a hill. To the upper right in the sky, as is typical with Spruce, something magical is going on. The characteristic leaves of century plants are apparent, scattered around the composition. Anymore than this, you, the viewer, must begin your dialog with the painting.

Technically, the painting is very complex. Layers and layers of paint are built up. In places, the underpainting is allowed to show through. Spruce applies glazes to certain areas. Strong horizontal and vertical elements are woven throughout the composition.

This major late Spruce was exhibited at the University of Texas in 1988.

Exhibited:
University of Texas, Austin, Texas, 1988

Provenance:
Everett Spruce
Wunderlich Gallery
Acquired from the above by the present ownerCondition Report: Excellent condition.
