EVANDER MCIVOR LAW (1836-1920) Confederate Major General. His 4th Alabama, a part of John Bell Hood's division of James Longstreet's corp, distinguished itself at Gettysburg. ALS, "E Mc Law", 3 separate pages, Aug 27, 1894, South Florida Military Institute letterhead, Bartow, to former Confederate Major General Fitzhugh Lee (1835-1905), excellent content explaining his participation at Gettysburg. In part, "...Your letter of inquiry in regard to matters at Gettysburg reached me...I arrived at the point on the Chambersburg road where the other brigades of Hood's div[ision] were lying, between 11 and 12...on the 2nd...I had marched...24 miles...starting at about 2.30 O'clock A.M.. My men were not at all jaded...a half hours' rest would have put them in good condition for battle. In fact I expected to enter the fight as soon as I got up...we rested quietly for two or three hours before commencing our movement to the right (towards Round Top)...[Lafayette] McLaws' division started...we passed it and came into position on the extreme right of the army...After a thorough reconnaissance of the federal position, I entered a formal protest against a front attack, pointing out at the same time, the ease with which the enemy's flank could be turned. Hood endorsed this protest and sent it on to [James] Longstreet. Whether Genl [Robert E] Lee ever received it, I do not know...I am inclined to doubt it...I think the movement to our right was the proper one...if our attack had been delivered two hours earlier, just where it was made, it would have been a complete success. The details of the struggle for the possession of 'Little Round Top', the key to the whole position, shows this conclusively..." Very minor soiling,o/w VG. $1,500-2,500
