EUGÈNE ATGET (French, 1857-1927) ÉTALAGE DE BOUCHERIE, LES HALLES
EUGÈNE ATGET (French, 1857-1927) ÉTALAGE DE BOUCHERIE, LES HALLES "9057" inscribed in pencil on verso by the artist (most likely 3057 was the number intended, as a part of the PICTURESQUE PARIS, PART I series) signed "Atget" in pencil below number on verso albumen print 6 15/16 x 7 9/16 in. (17.6 x 19.2 cm) circa 1898 PROVENANCE Harry Lunn, Paris & New York Private Collection, NEW YORK LITERATURE Françoise Reynaud, EUGÈNE ATGET, Paris, 1984, pl. 31 (illustrated) Laure Beaumont-Maillet, ATGET PARIS, Paris, 1992, p. 85 (illustrated) Guillaume Le Gall, ATGET, PARIS PITTORESQUE, Paris, 1998, p. 116 (illustrated) Atget was relatively new to photography when he made this splendid photograph in the old market of Les Halles in the center of Paris. Although he liked to photograph in the early morning when street traffic was at a minimum, these same hours were a peak time at Les Halles. Consequently, the frequent passage of white-aproned butchers during the long exposure left ghost images in the lower right corner of the image. At the left, the shopkeepers stood still long enough to be recorded proudly in front of their impressive displays of meat. In the 1970s, the market was moved to Rungis near the Orly airport, where it continues in a decidedly more modern fashion. The great pavilions of Les Halles, designed by Victor Baltard in the 19th century, were torn down and replaced by an underground shopping mall and regional transport center.
