(21.8 x 18.1 cm) 1923 ESTIMATE: $6,000-8,000 PROVENANCE Private Collection, PARIS Robert Miller Gallery, NEW YORK LITERATURE John Szarkowski and Maria Morris Hambourg, THE WORK OF ATGET: VOLUME III, NEW YORK, 1983, p. 101, pl. 65 (another detail of sculpture illustrated) Atget was not inclined to photograph sculpture from the vantage points prescribed by the landscape designer. He personalized his compositions by focusing on details and capturing the variations of light and dark. The sculpture in this photograph is the main attraction at Saint-Cloud, "La Grande Cascade," designed by Antoine Le Pautre in the late 17th century. This artificial cascade, which Atget photographed extensively, received water from the urn held by the sculpture depicted here, one of the two allegorical representations of the rivers, Marne and Seine. Atget's aim was not to create a map of the gardens for his viewers, but to present the evocative details he discovered while exploring the setting. We see the marble sculpted figure from the side, framed by the dark background of trees, and are struck by the variations of light as the sun pours down on the surface of the stone figure.
