Oxonii, e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1723FIRST EDITION, pages (4), 168, roy 8vo, contemporary panelled calf, label chipped, with elephant-head device in gilt in each of the five other spine compartments, with the attractive armorial bookplate of John Putland : a little wear to the outer joints, binding strong, otherwise a very good to nice copy. Case 325. Este (1696-1745) moved to Ireland in 1724 under the patronage of Archbishop Boulter of Armagh. He was created Bishop of Ossory in 1736 and subsequently Bishop of Waterford and Lismore in 1740. He carried out notable renovations to both the bishop's palaces in both Kilkenny and Waterford. A second volume of these college verses was edited by Anthony Parsons and issued in 1748. John Putland's copy, with his distinctive bookplate and a neat number in pen, probably his catalogue number. Putland (1709-73), Dublin merchant and banker, prominent in 18C Dublin commercial and intellectual life. He subscribed to no less than eight copies of John Rocque's map of Dublin and assembled an extensive personal library of more than 4000 volumes.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: SANCHEZ ( Francisco ). With additional engraved title-page, the printed title-page in red and black, pages (56), 864 ; 32 ; (62) and bound in at end is the title-page and conjugate blank to the same printers fifth edition of the same work, 8vo, contemporary vellum, yap edges, all edges uncut : the lower board stained, a stain which penetrates to the rear endpapers and flyleaves but not beyond : a strongly bound and very good copy. Sanchez, commonly called Franciscus Sanctius Brocensis (1523-1601), successively professor of Greek and of rhetoric at Salamanca. His Minerva, first published at that town in 1587, was long the standard work on Latin grammar. "The ultimate success of his Minerva was unbounded.
