ESCAPE HATCH TO A WORLD WAR II HELLCAT FIGHTER
ESCAPE HATCH TO A WORLD WAR II HELLCAT FIGHTER
A metal frame and plexiglass and escape hatch from a World War II Hellcat fighter, 19" x 24 1/2", the green steel frame reading: "EMERGENCY PUSH OUT" with a lever that reads "LIFT" and at bottom a notice reading "PUSH HERE". Very good. The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a carrier-based fighter aircraft developed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat in Navy service. Although the F6F bore a family resemblance to the Wildcat, it was a completely new design powered by a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800. The Hellcat and the Vought F4U Corsair were the primary USN fighters during the second half of World War II. From the personal collection of World War II and Civil War historian Michael Miner. Miner's thirty-year collection was built through an extensive system of contacts he developed with artifact hunters and diggers in Europe and the Far East, and he maintained careful records of the items he amassed.
