The Baltic island of Fehmarn was a major influence on Kirchner's art during this period, and he regarded it as a primitive paradise analogous to Gauguin's Tahiti. In this highly expressive watercolor, he depicts the rugged, wildly natural appearance of its coastline. It relates closely to the oil painting of the same title and year (Gordon no. 264)
