EPHRAIM ELMER ELLSWORTH ORIGINAL SKETCH
(1837-1861) Union officer and a close friend of Lincoln, leader of "Ellsworth's Zouaves", killed by a hotel owner in Alexandria after tearing down a Confederate flag which had flown above the hotel. A unique item, an original sketch by Ellsworth in ink on a 4 3/4" x 4" sheet. Titled in his hand "Single Stick Exercise", it depicts men training with swords. Ellsworth notes at bottom: "R or L foot forward Blows made from wrist Blow at Head...return at face, Blow at Ribs...". Tipped to a vintage album sheet, upon which is affixed a note of provenance: "Original sketch by Col. E. E. Ellsworth first man shot in war of Rebellion Captain of the celebrated 'Ellsworth's Zouaves'. Presented by his parents at his old house in Mechanicsville N.Y. to Rev. Chas. Townsend, & by him to Dr. Wakeley". Ragged left edge with a bit of toning thereon, otherwise very good.

Estimate: $600 - 800.
