ENGLISH POTTERY
ENGLISH POTTERY - A rare medieval Burley Hill pottery jug, of tapering cylindrical form beneath a tall spool shaped neck and loop handle, degraded lead glaze, 7in high; four Burley Hill pottery jug fragments and wasters, 12th - 13th century (5) (see illustration) The discovery of a potters kiln was made at Burley Hill, near Duffield, Derby in January 1862 by workmen carrying out land improvements for the Kedleston estate. It was at this time that the present pots were found. The site was rediscovered one hundred years later during ploughing. The colour of the pottery body varies from orange to grey. The pots are finished with a green lead glaze and many have incised stamped or applied form of decoration. Literature: Llewellyn Jewitt, The Ceramic Art of Great Britain, 1883, p.62, figs 271-272
