ENGLISH MERCHANT AT LEGHORN. Seasonable reflections on the late convention, concluded the 3d of May last, between the courts of Vienna and Turin, for partitioning between them the territories belonging to the republic of Genoa ; especially shewing the injurious consequence to the British trade, should Savona and Final be annexed, in virtue of any future general peace, to the dominions of the house of Savoy. In a letter from an English merchant residing at Leghorn, to his correspondent at London. London : Printed for M. Cooper in Pater-Noster-Row [1747]FIRST (ONLY) EDITION, pages 47, (1, blank), 8vo, recent wrapper : a very good copy. Kress 4870. Goldsmiths 8289. Hanson 6068. Wide-ranging reflections on British trading interests in northern Italy.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) GREAT BRITAIN, PARLIAMENT. An exact list of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal: as also of the Knights and Commissioners of Shires, Citizens, and Burgesses, of the first Parliament of King George. Summon’d to meet at Westminster on the 17th day of March 1714/15, and from thence continu’d, by several Prorogations, until the 11th day of November 1718, being the fourth session of the fift Parliament of Great Britain. Wherein every Member is properly distinguish’d by the chief Seat or common Residence of his Family, or by his Prosession, or publick Employment. The many Alterations that have happen’d during the Three Sessions, by the Death of several of the Members, by undue Elections, double Returns, Promotion to Places of Honour and Profit, &c. to this Time. The fifth edition, corrected. London, printed for R. Gosling, at the Mitre and Crown against St. Dunstan’s Church in Fleet-Street. 1719. Pages (2), 22, 25-56, complete thus, signed A-G4, small 8vo, recent paper wrapper, fore and lower edges uncut : small hole in last six leaves without serious loss : a very good copy. (2) SHIPPEN ( Wm. ), JEFFREYS ( Edward ) & HANMER ( Sir Thomas ). Three speeches against continuing the army, &c. As they were spoken in the House of Commons the last session of parliament. To which are added, the reasons given by the Lords, who protested against the bill for punishing mutiny and desertion. Printed for William Johnson at the Bible in Cornhill, 1718. FIRST EDITION, pages 46, (2, blank), 8vo, recent paper wrapper : a very good copy. There was another issue, printed for J. Morphew : both are equally represented in ESTC. Goldsmiths 5503. Shippen (1673-1743), a Parliamentary Jacobite, opposed the Mutiny Bill and achieved some success in his efforts to move the reduction of votes for military purposes. In his speech, printed here, and which created a considerable stir, he implied that George was ignorant of the English language and constitution and suggested that the King's speech seemed rather calculated for the meridian of Germany than of Great Britain. It is startling in its free-wheeling and some would say impertinent comments about the King. He was, not surprisingly, sent to the Tower(DNB).(3) GERMAN NOBLEMAN. A compleat view of the present politicks of Great Britain. In a letter from a German nobleman, to his friend at Vienna : translated from the French original [Le système politique de la Grande-Bretagne dans la conjoncture présente...ou Lettre écrite de Londres par un Gentilhomme allemand á un de ses amis á Vienne], lately printed at Brussels. London : Printed for T. Cooper, at the Globe in Pater-noster-Row 1743. Pages 66, without half-title and with price at foot of title, 8vo, recent wraps : very good-nice. Goldsmiths' 8030. A satirical, yet admiring work - a European view of British foreign policy.(4) POLITICS. A key to the present politicks of the principal powers of Europe. Giving a succinct view of their conduct for many years past, and fully shewing their present views and measures, and the tendency of them. Translated from the original lately published at Amsterdam. Printed for T. Cooper, in Pater-Noster-Row, 1743. FIRST EDITION, 64-pages, 8vo, recent paper wrapper : with a neat repair to a tear without loss in the final leaf, but still a very good copy.
