The composition is perfectly balanced in the tones and the colors, and represents an elegant outside scene that must be considered also like testimony of the habits and of the amusements of an age that often was watched with melancholy. XIX the century, in fact, was characterized from many often extreme changes, that they made to mourn nearly, the amusement elegant and absolutely carefree of the century before.
In this painting, in fact all it has the taste of the dream: colors are rarefied and from the tonalities pastel, the personages seem to lead an ideal one danced, characterized with motions and elegant allures , than it can be extended also to the objects like the table, characterized by the elegant feet and by the care of decorations, until to elegant and aristocratic dresses. The conversation and the game of chess between the dame and the knight, under curious looks of another dame ( that appears more young), happens in a place set apart between a bush and the margins of a small wood.
The castle in distance contributes to create the dream atmosphere. The refined chromatic agreement and the perfect equilibrium of the shapes and the volumes make of this painting a refined element of furnishings.
