At the start of Gowin’s career, street photography was the dominant style of the day. Yet Gowin ultimately established a name for himself as a chronicler of family life. Gowin’s wife Edith and her family were from Danville, Virginia and lived just down the street from Gowin’s childhood home. In the summer of 1967, when Gowin was in Danville to meet with the draft board during the Vietnam War, he photographed Edith’s family for the first time. Recognizing that this was some of his best work, Gowin returned to RISD, where his teacher, Harry Callahan, reaffirmed that his work had hit a turning point. Over the next few years Gowin compulsively recorded the close-knit family in their natural environment.
