ELVIS PRESLEY: (1935 - 1977) American singer, "The King of Rock and Roll" whose gyrations on stage wowed the crowd. His most popular hits include "Hound Dog", "Love Me Tender", and " Don't Be Cruel". A great Presley piece, his personal copy of Cherio's Book of Numbers (Garden City, N.Y., Garden City Publishing Company, Inc., 1932) 304pp. 8vo., original boards, no dustjacket. Signed and inscribed by Presley to Gary Pepper on the front blank flyleaf "To Gary For your may years of Friendship. Elvis Presley" in black ballpoint together with numerous annotations in his hand throughout the work. This book was among 300 books on spirituality which Presley hauled along in trunks wherever he traveled. Annotations include "BORN UNDER CAPRICORN" underneath a map of the zodiac; "BLACK SAPHIRE MY STONE" beside a passage on the symbolism and power of the number eight. Presley, who was born on January 8 took many notes agreeing with some of the passages. Beneath a passage noting that people born under this number are "...lonely; they are misunderstood, and they seldom reap the reward for the good they may do while they are living..." he writes "OFTEN MISUNDERSTOOD" Interestingly in the discussion of the number eight, the author also discusses the significance of the number four as a nearly fatalistic number especially when encountering the number eight and reads in part: "...the nearly equally fatalistic number of 4 is continually recurring, we may then be sure that we are in the presence of one of those strange playthings of Fate with the possibilities that tragedy may be interwoven in their Destiny...". Next to that passage he writes "GINGER" (his then fiancTe Ginger Alden) and below the same passage he writes "TO HAVE A TRUE SOUL MATE WHO SEEKS THE SAME SPIRITUAL LEVEL AS ONES SELF". Alden, you may remember, was the person who found him dead on Aug. 16, 1977. In all, about thirteen pages contain various notations by Presley and about twenty pages contain underscores. Accompanied by a notarized letter of authentication by Presley's stepbrother, David Stanley. Book bears only minor wear, a few dog-eared pages, light toning to page edges, otherwise very good condition. $2,000-3,000
